NYS ELA Test was cancelled for School Year 2019-2020. at this time, we do know yet if students will have to take it for school year 2020-2021.
If your child is in 3rd grade, this will be the first year your child will have to the NYS Standardized Tests. Your child will have to take one test in ELA and one test in Math.
There are many ways to help your child prepare for this test:
1. Try to reduce your child's stress about the test. Click on the below link to learn some ways to help your child reduce their anxiety about taking the state tests.
Test Stress
2. Have your child go to bed either on time or a little bit earlier the night before the test. This way they will be rested.
3. Make sure your child has a good breakfast on the days that the test will be given.
4. Ask your teacher at your child's parent-teacher conference what you can do to help get your child ready.
5. Support your child at home by reading with them for at least 20 minutes every night. Ask your child questions about the story as your read. Using questions that start with the words "how" and "why" is a good strategy because it helps your child to think more deeply about a text. Try to ask the most difficult questions that you can think of about the story. This will encourage your child to really think about the text and be more prepared for the questions that may be asked on the test. Below are question stems parents can use at home:
